Chapter Nine

I’d actually slept a little. I felt horrible about it. My daughter was in danger, her psyche stolen by a madwoman. How dare I sleep? The pull of daylight was too strong to resist after I’d managed to stay up the entire day before. I was, after all, a creature of the night. I chose to cut myself a little slack. It wasn’t as if I’d slept the whole day away, not that my body didn’t want to.

I woke at noon with the aid of a very loud alarm clock and an even louder guest from the floor beneath me banging on my door to tell me to turn the damn alarm off. Whoever said small towns were full of the friendliest people hadn’t met this guy. Then again, he was a guest so who knows where he blew in from. I managed to brush my teeth and brush my hair into what I hoped was a presentable mess. After so many years of not being able to see myself in the mirror, I’d gotten really good at brushing my teeth blind. I hoped my hair brushing skills were just as well. If not, no one had dared tell me otherwise. I dressed quickly in dark jeans, a black T-shirt, black leather boots and you guessed it—a black leather jacket. Standard kick ass vampire detective attire. I imagine most people assumed I dressed in black to look cool. Honestly, it just really hid blood well and helped me blend into dark shadows better. I hung the Do Not Disturb sign on my door knob before leaving. I didn’t want anyone to discover I’d skipped the B&B’s breakfast and lunch offerings in favor of the cow blood in the mini refrigerator.

Kyle Walker lived all the way on the other end of town. However, the town itself was so small my rented GPS got me there in fifteen minutes. I pulled up along the curb outside the small white house and cut the engine. My cell phone vibrated, so I took a look to see a text from Sherbet. He’d apparently been doing some research for me. According to the information Sherbet had sent me, Walker was an attorney who’d lived in New York for several years before moving to Missouri half a year ago. He’d only been in Two Moons for about six weeks. He’d made it two weeks in the small town before filing the police report against the so-called Victoria Jones. I felt it pretty safe to assume his moving around this past year had a lot to do with my evil half-sister. I texted my thanks to Sherbet and exited the car. I received another request to be careful as I made my way to Walker’s door and texted him back that I would. Sheesh, just because you want to spill someone’s blood and crush their heart in your hands, everybody thinks you’re going to be all careless about it.

I rang Walker’s doorbell and gave him the courtesy of waiting about twenty seconds before I banged my fist on the door.
